Voice and Musical Ear
“The voice reproduces what the ear listens”
Listening is the ability to use the ear consciously in order to communicate.
Music is an art based on listening and requires a special development of the listening function. A musical ear must know how to perceive and analyze each of the parts of the frequency spectrum with the maximum speed and precision.
The musical ear integrates the ability to join two functions, a sensory and a motor function. It is the coordination of perception and auditory memory, with the organs and muscles that intervene in voice production or playing an instrument. This is important in order to reproduce the sound with accuracy, security and ease.
The ear plays an important role in control of the voice, body image and motor control. Tomatis proved that by improving listening abilities of the performer there is a better control of his voice or instrument.
As a result of his investigation, Alfred Tomatis based his method of listening training in three laws:
- The voice only contains the sounds the ear listens to.
- If the ear is given the possibility to listen correctly, vocal emissions are instantly and unconsciously improved.
- It is possible to transform phonation through a listening stimulation during a certain amount of time.
The Tomatis Method will help to improve:
- The ability to perceive sounds, relationship between them and their harmony.
- Fast recognition of the pitch of the notes when heard and ability to recognize distances between notes and intervals.
- Set the real pitch of the heard sound to reproduce it.
- Intonation and quality in singing and playing instruments.
- Musical memory.
- Rhythmic aptitude.
- Loss of control in voice intensity.
Evaluate your listening
Listening cannot be seen. The only way to evaluate it is indirectly through skills and behaviors that are related to it in one way or another.
